A-Frame
(A-Frame)

How to Construct the A-frame
1. To make the A-frame, three sturdy wooden poles, a saw or bolo, a stone or piece of rock, rope and a pencil are needed. Cut two pieces of wood 2 meters long to serve as the legs of the A-frame. Cut the third piece a meter long to serve as the crossbar of the frame.
2. Tie the poles together at one end. The tied rope should not be too near the ends of the poles. Leave an allowance of 2-1/2 centimeters and make sure the rope fastens the poles securely. Tie one end of the crossbar to the middle of one of the legs. Tie the other end to the middle of the second leg.
3. Tie one end of the string to the top (sic) of the frame. Tie a stone or a piece of rock to the other end. The stone should be light enough to be carried easily but heavy enough so that when freely suspended, it cannot be moved by the wind.
4. A finished A-frame. The next job is to mark the reference point on the crossbar which would indicate level ground. |
1. Stand the A-frame upright. Using stakes, mark the spots where the legs of the frame touch the ground.
2. With a pencil, mark the crossbar where it gets in touch with the weighted string.
3. Reverse the position of the A-frame's legs such that the left leg is exactly on the same spot previously occupied by the right leg and vice-versa.
4. Again make a mark on the crossbar where it is crossed by the string. If the two marks made on the crossbar are on exactly the same place this means that the A-frame is standing on level ground. However, if the marks are separate, the A-frame is standing on uneven ground.
5. If the two marks on the crossbar are separate, make another mark at the midpoint between them.
6. Move the A-frame to another site such that the string passes through the middle mark or midpoint. Again mark the points where the legs of the A-frame touch the ground with stakes.
7. Reverse the positions of the legs. If the string passes through the same point, this means that the A-frame is standing on level ground and that the middle mark of midpoint indicates level position. If not, repeat the same procedure to find the correct midpoint on the crossbar.
8. Now that you have found the level position of the A-frame, you can use the A-frame to layout level contour on any piece of land. |
1. Make a study of the area for which contour lines are to be determined. Begin marking contour lines near the highest point.
2. Drive the first stake at the boundary of the area near its highest point.
3. Place one leg of the A-frame at the side of the base of the first stake which faces higher ground. Position the other leg such that the weighted string passes the midpoint mark (level position marker) made on the crossbar.
4. Move the A-frame to the next spot such that one-leg touches the second stake at the side of its base which faces higher ground.
5. Move the other leg to a position where the weighted string passes the midpoint mark on the crossbar. Drive another stake just beside the second leg where it faces lower ground. Continue across the field in this way.
6. Using the A-frame, mark off contour lines on the field. Use stakes to mark these contour lines. The steeper the area is or the poorer the drainage quality of the soil or the heavier and the more frequent rainfall is, the closer should be the spacing. |
